How it all started…

My name is Sophie Moore, In 2015 I achieved a BSc(Hons) in Chemistry. Initially I started my career in industry, developing adhesives and sealants for the automotive and transportation industry. I worked my way up to Technical Manager after 3 years, working with companies and training manufactures how to apply and use adhesives. I spent a year developing a training program for the company and wrote a book detailing best practices and engineering expertise for the industry. During this time, I started training adults around the science behind adhesives and how to engineer in a way which reduces operational and manufacturing errors. After a year of training and teaching, I began to realise how much I adored teaching and wanted to propel my love for science into the younger generation.

Intrinsic Motivation…

I began my teaching career in 2019 and acquired a position at Brixham College (secondary school), the school I started at. As I really knuckled down into the world of teaching, it soon became apparent to me that neither pupil or parents had a key understanding of their working grade or their target grade. I began a few qualifications in leading teaching (NPQLT), and ‘teaching boys to succeed’, where I began to understand the ideas behind what makes pupils successful in a school environment. This propelled my ideas forward and I began to develop the ideas behind My Grade Tracker, with pupil attainment at the forefront.

Currently I am Deputy Head of Science at Brixham College, and I am continuously trialling the ideas behind My Grade Tracker to enhance the performance of pupils at a secondary level. My Grade Tracker is a portal which allows pupils to track their progress over time against their target data. Research shows that extrinsic motivation can lead to great outcomes overall, which is what My Grade Tracker is largely based upon. However, over time, it has been shown that My Grade Tracker leads to intrinsic motivation as it pushes pupils to strive to be in competition with themselves and take ownership of their learning. It is something I wholeheartedly believe in and I envision bridging the gap between school and home learning.

What Our Pupils Say…

“I love how I can track my current grades against my target.”

“I always want to make sure I beat my target grade.”

“It is so clear to see where you are currently working at against your target.”

“I think it’s great that I get to input my assessment scores.”
